Classificatie van staalkabels gebeurt op basis van het aantal strengen en het aantal draden in elke streng, bijvoorbeeld 6 x 7, 6 x 19, 6 x 37, 8 x 19, 19 x 7, enz. Dit zijn echter nominale classificaties die de feitelijke constructie al dan niet weerspiegelen. De klasse 6 x 19 omvat bijvoorbeeld constructies zoals 6 x 21 toevoegdraad, 6 x 25 toevoegdraad en 6 x 26 Warrington Seale. Ondanks het feit dat geen van de drie genoemde constructies 19 draden heeft, vallen ze onder de classificatie 6 x 19.

Een leverancier die een bestelling ontvangt voor touw van 6 x 19 mag er dus vanuit gaan dat dit een klassereferentie is en kan mogelijk elke constructie binnen deze categorie leveren. Maar als de klus de speciale kenmerken van een 6 x 25 lasdraad vereist en in plaats daarvan een 6 x 19 Seale wordt geleverd, kan een kortere levensduur het gevolg zijn.

Om dergelijke misverstanden te voorkomen, is de veiligste procedure het bestellen van een specifieke constructie. In het geval dat de specifieke constructie niet bekend is of twijfelachtig is, moet het touw per klasse worden besteld, samen met een beschrijving van het eindgebruik ervan.

Slechts drie staalkabels onder de 6 x 19-classificatie hebben feitelijk 19 draden: 6 x 19 twee-operatie (2-op), 6 x 19 Seale (S) en 6 x 19 Warrington (W). De rest heeft verschillende draadaantallen. In de klasse 6 x 37 is er een grotere verscheidenheid aan draadconstructies. De algemeen verkrijgbare constructies in de 6 x 37 klasse zijn onder meer: 6 x 31 Warrington Seale (WS), 6 x 36 WS, 6 x 41 Seale Filler Wire (SFW), 6 x 41 WS, 6 x 43 Filler Wire Seale (FWS) , 6 x 46 WS, etc. – geen daarvan bevat precies 37 draden.
